S06 EP.73 of our Middle East Motorcycle Tour series takes us into the bustling yet culturally rich city of Doha, Qatar’s capital. From futuristic skyscrapers to ancient traditions, here’s a recount of our incredible first impressions riding through this mesmerizing city.
### A Cityscape Like No Other
Entering Doha on a motorcycle offers a unique perspective that is hard to match by any other mode of transport. The first thing that strikes you is the stunning skyline – a mix of innovative architectural marvels like the torch-shaped Aspire Tower and the iconic Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M. Pei which seemingly floats above the waters of Doha Bay.
The ride along the Corniche, a waterfront promenade reshaped along Doha Bay, offers panoramic views of the city. On one side are modern towers glistening under the morning sun and on another, traditional wooden dhows bobbing gently in the water – a scene encapsulating Doha’s blend of new and old.
### Cultural Deep Dive
No visit to Doha would be complete without exploring its deep-rooted culture and traditions. Our tour led us through Souq Waqif, a traditional market dating back at least a century. Riding slowly through nearby alleys revealed an aromatic array of spices, handicrafts, and textiles from across the region.
We parked our bikes and strolled around for hours; we were captivated by falcon shops displaying these revered birds so crucial to Qatari heritage. Watching locals in flowing white thobes haggle over goods added an authentic auditory backdrop to this colorful visual feast.
### Culinary Delights
Doha’s culinary scene was another revelation during our visit. From savoring local dishes like machboos (a fragrant rice dish with meat) and madrouba (a hearty chicken porridge) at street stalls within Souq Waqif to indulging in world-class cuisine at upscale restaurants overlooking the cityscape, every meal was an adventure in taste.
### Artistic Impressions
Another highlight was visiting Katara Cultural Village, where art installations and galleries offer insights into not just Qatari culture but also broader Islamic art influences across time periods and regions. The juxtaposition between modernity and tradition here perfectly encapsulates what Doha is all about.
Riding out in time for sunset led us towards The Pearl-Qatar – an artificial island known for its luxurious shopping experiences but equally important for its Venetian-like canals which we explored as dusk settled over Doha.
