### MY YEAR 2021: TRAVEL ABKHAZIA – The Story of One Girl

#### Discovering the Enchanting Beauty of Abkhazia

As the world grappled with the ongoing effects of a global pandemic, travel became a distant dream for many. But for Anna, a spirited young adventurer with an insatiable curiosity about lesser-known destinations, 2021 became the year to explore one of the hidden gems of Eastern Europe – Abkhazia.

#### Venturing into the Unknown

Nestled between the lush slopes of the Caucasus Mountains and the deep blue waters of the Black Sea, Abkhazia offered an allure that was irresistible to Anna. Although recognized as a part of Georgia by most countries, Abkhazia has declared independence and remains a land shrouded in mystery and political intrigue. For Anna, this only added to its charm.

With travel restrictions easing slightly in mid-2021, Anna packed her bags, setting off from her home in Warsaw, Poland. Her journey was as much about discovering herself as it was about exploring Abkhazia.

#### First Impressions

Crossing into Abkhazia from Georgia’s Zugdidi was an adventure in itself. The checkpoint crossing was straightforward but filled with a palpable tension. Once inside, however, Anna found herself overwhelmed by the warm welcome from local Abkhazians.

Her first stop was Sukhumi, the capital city, which juxtaposed war-torn buildings with vibrant markets and lively seaside promenades. The city’s rugged beauty and resilience left a profound impression on her.

#### Exploring Sukhumi’s Hidden Treasures

In Sukhumi, Anna explored botanical gardens that hosted plant species from all over the world and visited monkey nurseries that were unlike anything she had seen before. However, it was the ruins of ancient buildings and abandoned houses from pre-war times that captured her imagination, telling stories of a turbulent past.

#### A Dive into Nature

One cannot visit Abkhazia without embracing its natural landscapes. From Sukhumi, Anna took excursions to Lake Ritsa and Gagra town. At Lake Ritsa’s turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks provided perfect photo opportunities while also offering moments of serene solitude.

However, it was in Gagra where Anna truly connected with nature. She spent days hiking through unmarked trails and discovered secluded beaches where she would sit for hours watching dolphins play in gentle waves at sunset.

#### Cultural Immersion

Abkhazian culture is rich with traditions untouched by time. Throughout her travels across various towns including Pitsunda and New Athos Monastery area, Anna indulged in local cuisines like spicy Ajika sauce and mouth-watering Khachapuri (cheese bread). However more than food; It was music that drew her closer to locals – impromptu dance performances at communal gatherings welcomed her into their lives like one of their own.

### Reflections on A Journey Less Traveled

As 2021 came to an end; reflecting back on her experiences; Anna realized this journey through Abkhazia wasn’t just about discovering new landscapes or cultures – but also about understanding resilience amidst adversity both historical & personal level.
Her stay there challenged many preconceived notions while opening up avenues for empathy towards people living in conflict zones around world yet striving every day towards normalcy & happiness despite odds stacked against them.
Anna’s story is testimony that even smallest corners Earth have tales worth telling if only we’re willing venture off beaten path seek them out ourselves.
