In an era where travel is often synonymous with bustling cities and crowded markets, the secluded serenity of Bhutan presents a stark, yet refreshing contrast. This is precisely what drew me, along with the charismatic adventurer and content creator Juanpa Zurita, to explore this mystical kingdom nestled in the Eastern Himalayas. Our journey was part of National Geographic’s “Best of the World” series, designed to highlight unique and transformative travel experiences around the globe.
#### Day 1: Thimphu – The Beating Heart of Bhutan
Our expedition began in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital and largest city. Unlike other world capitals, Thimphu is remarkably serene and orderly. Development here is carefully managed to preserve its cultural integrity. We started our day at the Buddha Dordenma Statue, a gigantic Buddha that overlooks the entire valley from a height of over 50 meters. Juanpa captured stunning footage with his drone as we marveled at the panoramic views offered at this spiritual site.
Next, we delved into Bhutanese culture at the Folk Heritage Museum which gave us insights into traditional Bhutanese lifestyle. The highlight for both Juanpa and myself was trying our hands at archery, Bhutan’s national sport. Though neither of us proved naturally skilled archers, laughter filled the air as arrows often missed their mark.
#### Day 2: Punakha – Ancient Capital and Spiritual Insights
A three-hour drive from Thimphu through winding mountain roads brought us to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. Here lies the majestic Punakha Dzong (fortress), situated at the confluence of two major rivers—Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. As we crossed the traditional cantilever bridge to enter the dzong, it felt like stepping back in time.
Juanpa interviewed a Buddhist monk who shared insights about Vajrayana Buddhism’s profound philosophy and its centrality in Bhutanese life. We also had an opportunity to participate in a prayer session that resonated deeply with both our crew and viewers alike; it was a palpable reminder of how spirituality permeates every aspect of life here.
#### Day 3: Paro – A Leap into Adventure
No visit to Bhutan would be complete without tackling what is arguably its most famous attraction—the hike to Paro Taktsang or Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Perched on a cliffside about 900 meters above Paro Valley, it demands determination and stamina from all who trek there.
Starting early morning to avoid crowds, we embarked on what turned out to be an exhilarating climb filled with laughter and camaraderie. With multiple stops along the way to savor breathtaking vistas (and catch our breath), we reached Tiger’s Nest by noon. Inside this sacred site, Juanpa’s respect for local customs shone through as he carefully chose what parts were appropriate to film so as not involve invasive or disrespectful angles.
Sitting on a ledge overlooking majestic mountains after exploring Tiger’s Nest brought an overwhelming feeling of peace—a fitting conclusion for our final day.
